Chilly Thrills – Animals Get Their Winter Fill
Animals at the Houston Zoo enjoy snowy paws, hooves, and beaks as the city thaws from winter storm Enzo. During the weather event, a group of 66 dedicated staff members stayed at the Zoo to ensure the security of the campus and watched as animals enjoyed the snow in a fun and enriching way. The Zoo reopened to the public on Thursday, Jan. 23 with regular hours of operation.
Three-year-old Asian elephant Teddy experienced snow for the first time, his excitement shared by his keeper, as Teddy explored his snowy surroundings. Meanwhile, a pair of grey-crowned cranes, Theodore and Ellie, elegantly navigate their snow-covered habitat in the newly opened Birds of the World.
Over at the Galápagos Islands exhibit, California sea lions frolic in their snow-covered surroundings. While these sea lions rely on thick blubber for insulation in the wild, at the Zoo, they enjoy exploring their habitat’s temperature-controlled waters, kept at approximately 60 degrees Fahrenheit, allowing them to enjoy their winter wonderland in comfort.
Two capybaras explored a pile of snow while staying warm and cozy in their barn. Ravioli, the playful North American river otter, slides and tumbles through the snow. Mattie, the lion, curiously walks through the snow, flicking her paw in wonder, while a bongo uses his horns to shovel the snow in his exhibit.
Each animal at the Houston Zoo receives specialized care tailored to their species’ needs, ensuring they remain comfortable during colder months. All animal buildings, barns, and night houses are equipped with heaters and designed to withstand extreme weather conditions.
We want to give a BIG thank you to our ride-out team, who worked hard to make sure all our animals stay safe and warm.
