Grey-crowned cranes stomp their feet as they walk across grasslands. This flushes out insects and other potential prey that the cranes quickly catch and eat. Cranes are also often seen moving among herds of large mammals to feed on the insects frightened by herd movement.

How We Help Save Them

  • The Zoo provides training, salaries, equipment, and support for the Rwanda Wildlife Conservation Association to save crowned cranes in Rwanda.
  • The Zoo provides support for Rwandan wildlife professionals to rehabilitate and release injured and confiscated grey crowned cranes. Zoo vet staff provide expertise and training for Rwandan staff.
  • The Zoo provides support for education and community programs that protect crowned cranes and bats in Rwanda.
  • Schoolchildren in Rwanda showed increased knowledge about grey crowned cranes and their habitat, thanks to our partners’ work in the region.
