Join the Houston Zoo as we work together to help save Houston-area shorebirds. We will be assisting our local conservation partners at SPLASh (Stopping Plastics and Litter Along Shorelines) who focus on creating a cleaner environment for people, birds and other wildlife in the greater Houston-Galveston region through community science, education and outreach. During this field experience attendees will gain hands-on experience in the removal and monitoring of plastic debris along bayous and how that data is reported state-wide to help Texas leaders make decisions on how to protect humans and wildlife from plastic pollution. We will also take time to do some birding along the bayou, observing the species we are working to save.

The Houston Zoo & our partners at SPLASh will provide cleanup supplies, water to refill your reusable bottles, and binoculars.

Make sure to bring:

  • Reusable water bottle
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Weather-appropriate clothes (be sure to check the forecast as February in Houston can be a bit unpredictable)
