The Houston Zoo is single-use plastic straw free, and we are asking Houston area bars and restaurants to be straw free as well! To date, partnering locations have eliminated over 862,200 plastic straws from their establishments, saving sea turtles in the wild. Join our wildlife-saving campaign using the pledge form below.

Camp Zoofari is an immersive experience for children ages 4-16. Campers explore the Houston Zoo, meet Zoo animals and make new friends while learning about animals and how to save them in the wild.
Returning teens who are back for a second (or third or fourth!) Zoo Crew program have a wider range of exciting options available to them, including the chance to work in animal care as a Junior Zookeeper, educate guests as a Naturalist, or continue to work with our Camp Zoofari program as a Camp Mentor.

Malaysian Painted River TerrapinThis animal is ranked among the 25 most endangered tortoises and freshwater turtles on earth. Throughout much of the year, their grey/brown coloring matches their swampy surroundings. When breeding season arrives, the males become quite colorful! Their shells will lighten to reveal bold black markings, and their grey heads turn pure white with a bright crimson red strip developing between the eyes.
